1

My name is Emma. Today is my first art class at school. Mommy brought me to the classroom. I feel funny in my tummy.

2

Ms. Rivera is my teacher. She smiles at me. She shows me the art table. There are paints and brushes. I have never painted before.

3

My tummy feels tight because I am trying something new. That is okay. Ms. Rivera says, 'Feeling nervous is normal because our bodies tell us we are learning something different, and that helps us grow stronger and smarter.'

4

Ms. Rivera gives me a paintbrush. I hold it in my hand. The brush feels soft. I breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 2 counts, and breathe out for 6 counts. I dip the brush in red paint.

5

I paint a red line on my paper. Then I paint an orange line. I paint yellow, green, blue, and purple too. I made a rainbow! My hands are steady so I can paint the colors I want.

6

I did it! I tried something new. My tummy feels better now because I finished my painting and Ms. Rivera is proud of me. Ms. Rivera says, 'I am so proud of you, Emma.' I smile big. Trying new things is fun!

Social Story Methodology

Why This Story Works

My First Rainbow Art Class uses Carol Gray's methodology to normalize the physical sensations of anxiety during transitions—Emma's tight tummy and nervous feelings are validated as signs of learning and growth, not problems to avoid. By pairing emotional honesty with concrete coping strategies (the 4-2-6 breathing technique) and a clear success outcome, the story teaches children that discomfort during new experiences is manageable and temporary, helping reduce avoidance behaviors around unfamiliar activities.
