Today is my first day at preschool! Fatima and I walk into the classroom together. The room is bright and full of colors. I see dinosaurs on the walls!

2

Ms. Rodriguez comes over to say hello. She smiles at me. Ms. Rodriguez shows me where my cubby is because I need a place to put my things so I know where to find them later.

3

Ms. Rodriguez takes my hand. She walks me over to the block area. There are plastic dinosaurs and big blocks everywhere! When I feel worried about something new, I can hold my dinosaur toy tightly for 5 seconds, then let go slowly. This helps my body feel calm.

4

I pick up a big green dinosaur. It feels smooth in my hands. I can build a tall tower with blocks because building helps my brain focus on something fun so I feel less worried.

5

Soon it is time to say goodbye to Fatima. She gives me a hug. Ms. Rodriguez is here with me because she will help me and keep me safe all day so I know I am okay.

6

I watch Fatima walk out. Ms. Rodriguez takes my hand. We go back to play with the dinosaurs and blocks. I remember that I can squeeze my dinosaur toy if I feel worried. Preschool is fun!

Social Story Methodology

Why This Story Works

Amir's First Day at Preschool uses Carol Gray's descriptive and perspective-taking approach to demystify separation anxiety and sensory overwhelm during a major transition. By pairing concrete visual details (the bright classroom, dinosaurs on walls, smooth plastic toys) with emotional regulation strategies (the 5-second squeeze technique), the story gives children both a mental map of what to expect and practical tools to manage their nervous system when Fatima leaves. This combination addresses the core challenge many children face: not just understanding what happens, but knowing they can handle their own feelings when it does.
