Today I am going to the dentist with Mommy. The dentist's office is bright and colorful. I see puppy posters on the walls!

2

A helper calls my name. Mommy and I walk to the dental chair. The chair looks big and comfortable.

3

I sit in the dental chair. The chair goes up and down. The overhead light is very bright, so I squeeze Mommy's hand 3 times slowly to help myself feel calm. Dr. Patel comes in and smiles at me.

4

Dr. Patel looks at my teeth because healthy teeth help me chew food and smile big. She uses a small mirror to see all my teeth. I count each tooth slowly in my head while she looks.

5

Dr. Patel uses a soft brush to clean my teeth because clean teeth stay strong and healthy. The brush tickles a little bit! When it tickles, I take 3 slow breaths in through my nose and out through my mouth so my body stays relaxed.

6

All done! Dr. Patel says my teeth are very healthy. I did a great job at the dentist today.

7

Mommy and I leave the dentist's office. I feel proud of myself. I can come back to see Dr. Patel again soon!

Social Story Methodology

Why This Story Works

Emma Goes to the Dentist uses Carol Gray's approach of combining visual descriptions with concrete coping strategies to demystify a potentially overwhelming sensory experience. By naming specific sensory elements (the bright overhead light, the tickling brush) and pairing them with calming techniques (hand squeezing, slow breathing), the story gives children tools to manage anxiety rather than simply warning them what to expect. This transforms the dental visit from an unpredictable, anxiety-inducing event into a manageable sequence with built-in self-regulation strategies.
